Donald Trump’s Success with NLP
The question that I have for you is this: Does Donald Trump now have what it takes to be the next U.S. President? Now how would I know the answer to this question? Well, I have no idea. What I just wanted to share with you is an NLP perspective of what it takes to be successful in influencing.
You see in NLP, there is an interesting test that we can actually use to determine a candidate’s chances of winning an election. It has been proven to work in many of the past elections. And that is that test known as the total representation test.
The Total Representation Test
Now, what is the total representation test? First of all, you could realize that in this world where we live, we constantly receive information in our minds based on our five senses. And yet the way in which we represent this information in our mind could be very different for different groups of people.
And some of us tend to favor what I call the visual representation system which is basically how we store information in the images.
Some of us are more into the auditory aspect which is how things or someone sound to us. And then there is the kinesthetic which is the emotional connection that we feel towards someone or the things in our lives.
And finally, there is the auditory digital which actually represents the part of our representation system where we store information in what we call the digital format. Now basically what it means is that we are talking about logic right here. So, does this person look credible to me? Is his message congruent?
Did Donald Trump Pass the Test?
Let us take a look at how Mr. Trump actually fair in each of the four areas.
The Visual Test
For the visual, has Donald Trump been able to appeal to the visual needs of many of his voters? Now, I would certainly think so because being someone who is so good at using abstract language or what I call as a chunk up language to communicate to the voters.
His slogan, “Make America Great Again” is a very abstract term. So what does he mean by making America great again? But you see, remember some of the videos that I posted and shared with you in my Youtube page? I shared that the more abstract the language we use, the more chunked up language we use, the higher your chances are in winning rapport with the masses. Such language includes unspecified verbs.
The Use of Unspecified Verbs
Now what is an unspecified verb? If you remember those days when we learned the word verb, it is a word that refers to an action, an action word like run, make, create, and even the word think. These are action words.
Now why is it that an unspecified verb is so powerful when it is used as a plight in the areas of influence? When you consider the campaign of Donald Trump, the theme of his campaign is actually tied up to “Make America Great Again.”
So think about that. What does he really mean by making America great again? You see, by using an unspecified verb, the verb here is the verb make, it allows the people to start feeling in the depths themselves. And by doing so, he is able to get rapport with as many people as possible.
Now again we consider the theme that Obama actually uses or actually used eight years ago, and when he was also campaigning as a presidential candidate, he used the words “hope” and “change” very often.
So realize that when you use words like “change America needs,” “change” can mean so many things, isn’t it so? By using a word purposefully like the word “change,” it allows people to understand it the way they get it – the kind of change that they want America to experience or wish to experience.
So what I am saying is this. Very often, I realize that most people tend to face a lot of resistance when they are trying to persuade someone, or sell an idea, simply because they do not understand the need to do what I call a chunk up. Now when you use chunk up language like an unspecified verb, keeping it as general and as abstract as possible actually allows you to build rapport a lot more easily with anyone that you meet and anyone you wish to connect with.
So it is really a wise choice for Mr. Trump to focus on using chunk up language a lot to build rapport with his voters.
The Auditory Test
Now we are going to look at the auditory aspect. How does he sound to the voters? Possessing a really confident voice and very often, he sounds whenever he makes a speech, he sounds like he has a lot of energy and vigor. I absolutely believe he has that competitive edge over many of his rivals.
The Kinesthetic Test
And now looking at the kinesthetic aspect, what about the emotional connection he has with his voters. I could also only think that Mr. Trump was really wise in choosing some of the pressing issues to talk about in many of his speeches. And because he constantly focused on the problems that Americans are facing, he actually connected with the emotions. And always remember this, the facts would always tell but stories would always sell. And because Mr. Trump is very good at sharing stories, he was able to capture the attention of many of his voters and potential supporters.
Now perhaps the area that many would see or perceive as Mr. Trump as lacking in among the areas of this total representation test I believe would be in the auditory digital aspect.
The Auditory Digital Test
Now again, what is auditory digital? Simply put, it is how credible you appear to be. Perhaps this is an area where many of his potential voters will often see his campaign messages as somewhat incongruent, and therefore lack the faith and trust in him. Now is he that person who is reliable to bring America back to the top again? We know there are people who beg to differ.
What About You?
But “what about you?” What if I’m not interested in politics, how does this help me to increase my ability to influence people. It is the same way that it works in politics. Now, if you truly want to master the art of influence and persuasion, remember that it is not by appealing to a need, two needs, or three needs of the people, but all the four needs. This includes the visual, how you appear to people, how you often dress, the auditory needs, how you sound, sounding confident when you are speaking to your prospect or the person you want to influence, the kinesthetic that you have been able to connect the emotions, and finally, do you actually walk the talk yourself.
Now, are you someone who is often perceived as credible and trustworthy? Because if you are able to master all these four different needs of the human psychology, you would no doubt become a true master of influencing in no time.
So with that, I am going to trust you to put this simple strategy into use and may you achieve ultimate influence in your life.
